Greetings All:

This course is the flagship of the School for Living. When I published Just Conflict : Transformation through Resolution back in 2009 I promised folks that I would put out a workbook. I have explored a good many options for what that would look like and settled on this online course. While there is material in the book which is not included in this class [435 pages], this online format is much more accessible and portable.

You can sit down at a desktop and work your way through from start to finish [about 20 hours], or use the wifi at a coffeeshop on your tablet, or you can listen on your phone on the way to work. While the content can be challenging, you can easily go back to a lesson and review it. Once you enroll you have access for life.

The class is complete as it is but from time to time I expect that I will add content in response to questions. Especially helpful will be the comments of students like yourself. You can email me but even better is to sign in to Disqus and offer comments or questions on the lesson that it arises for you. That way you can have a discussion with other students and get support from them for the work you are doing.

If you want to get a feel for the course before you enroll, scroll down to the Curriculum section and click on the green buttons that say Preview to see that lesson.

Anything that is alive acts on its own behalf.

Amoeba move from the hot dry places toward the cool wet places. Plants grow towards the sun and become dormant when conditions are harsh. When we act in a healthy manner we make choices that create what we need.

For most of us in the developed world, the arena in which we can make the biggest gains toward greater safety and satisfaction are in the relationships we build with each other. The health and harmony of our primary relationships are the biggest determinants of our well being.

There are no relationships that are free of conflict. Indeed, the most perplexing and hurtful conflicts arise in the relationships we have with those with whom we are closest. Nevertheless, when we:

determine to address conflicts with others,

can name what the issue is for us such that others can agree that this is a problem for them as well,

will state what is true for us and can hear what is true for them even when it is not what we are experiencing,

we can move to a place with them where we find shared needs and can each commit to mutually beneficial action.

When we do this we find our relationships strengthened.

Still, this doesn't mean that we look forward to conflict as a way to strengthen our relationships. Instead we flinch. We back away from connection. We fear that conflict will actually harm us and the relationship and so we try to hide it.

What we must cultivate for ourselves is greater confidence in our competence to resolve conflict. JustConflict is intended to do just this.

In my 40 years as a psychotherapist I have offered my clients the most practical help I could find. Insight is not enough to solve the problems of daily living. We have to actually change our own behaviors. These changes are sometimes powerful and often simple, but rarely easy.

Taking lessons from the individuals, couples and families with which I have worked, I have produced guided modules that will help anyone who is looking to improve his or her significant relationships. This site makes those lessons available to many more people than I could serve in my office.

Much of my work as a pastoral psychotherapist has been with individuals and couples in highly conflicted and even abusive relationships. Learning how to help them has given me an understanding of how to describe complex and confusing concepts in a manner that can be easily understood.

If you have questions about the material, just make a comment on the page where you have the concern and I will respond as quickly as I can. Or email me at [email protected]

Testimonial from a woman in a recent workshop.

"I had the privilege to work with Mark recently for a whole day in a small group setting. I hope that my testimonial can do the experience justice.

First of all, Mark is an incredible teacher and facilitator. I already do quite a bit of self-development work, and yet I learned so much more about how I show up in life, including in conflicts, as well as have new tools for awareness in understanding how others show up too. Truly eye-opening. His wisdom, patience, and unique skills are such a gift. The presentation itself was fantastic and I learned a ton. As we workshopped, his ability to cut to the truth, in a gentle yet firm way, and walk us through it including action steps was remarkable.

This experience completely changed my perspective on myself, others and conflicts in general. To say that he “gave me new tools” is an understatement. He gave me a completely opened up perspective. What I learned in his class is something that will help me for the rest of my life. I would love to do more with Mark and highly recommend his work, no matter what stage you are in. He will meet you where you are with it and guide you. Even being in his presence, I knew I was working with someone very aware and “tuned in”. If you have an opportunity to work with him, go for it. You will come out of it changed, feeling more empowered with the new awareness and know-how, and more confident in handling difficult situations.
